The Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures Jetty Gala, is the newest premium dining event on our festival program. Debuting in 2021, it is a gala style cocktail event set amongst the stunning waters & mangroves of Broome’s world famous Roebuck Bay.

Shinju Matsuri’s premier dining event, the Sunset Long Table Dinner is a decadent banquet set in the sand, against the spectacular sunset backdrop of world-renowned Cable Beach.

LiveLighter Opening Ceremony

Join us at Town Beach to celebrate the official opening of Shinju Matsuri 2022. Experience a very special Yawuru Welcome to Country & cultural performances, before the traditional waking of Sammy the Dragon.

The LiveLighter Opening Ceremony marks the start of our 16-day program of diverse cultural, dining & art events that showcase the unique history & rich multicultural community of Broome.

The Roey’s Family Fun Day

1pm – 5pm | The Roey | Free

An event from the whole family to enjoy! With live music, free sausage sizzle, ice-cream, face painting & jumping castles, PLUS a great vantage point as the LiveLighter Float Parade goes past, the kids are sure to LOVE this Shinju event!

LiveLighter Float Parade

Make sure you’re in Chinatown on Sunday 21st August, to witness the fun, creativity & captivating energy of the LiveLighter Float Parade.

The Shinju Matsuri LiveLighter Float Parade is one of the most traditional events on our program, being part of the festival since the very early days. The stunning array of floats represent the diversity of the Broome community, being created by local community groups, schools, performance groups & local businesses.

The parade route begins at the Broome Civic Centre, before making its way through the streets of Chinatown, before ending at Male Oval.

LiveLighter Mardi Gras

5pm | Male Oval | Free

Join in the party at the end of the LiveLighter Float Parade with the LiveLighter Mardi Gras on Male Oval.

Be blown away by the variety of local talent, entertaining the masses with a vibrant evening of performance by local performance groups, schools & clubs. Food & drink is available all throughout the evening from a selection of the town’s most delicious food vans & vendors.

Pearl Master’s Dining

5pm & 8pm | Sydney Cove Oyster Bar | $225

In the spirit of Shinju Matsuri, Sydney Oyster Bar has created a menu that represents Broome’s rich pearling days & the multicultural people that heavily influenced the town’s cuisine from the early 1900’s.

Book in for one of two sessions, to experience a menu inspired by Malay, Chinese and Japanese cuisines, incorporating locally sourced produce that pays homage to the early pioneering years of Broome.

Be serenaded as you dine, by local songstress Jamie Jackett, performing a selection of modern day tunes, made over in a swingin’ roaring 20’s jazz style.

Bugarrigarra Nyurdany, Because of the Dreaming

5pm | Nyamba Buru Yawuru | $160

Your intimate evening will begin at dusk in the beautiful gardens, where you will take part in a smoking ceremony conducted by Yawuru elders. You will then be a part of Yawuru’s journey with their Bugarrigarra Nyurdany (Because of the Dreaming): the Stories of Yawuru Country and People.

Yawuru guides will take you on a tour which highlights the spectacular artworks, installations and culture at Nyamba Buru Yawuru and the Liyan-ngan Nyirrwa Centre.

Chinatown Feast

The Shinju Matsuri Chinatown Feast, is returning to take over the heart of Chinatown on Wednesday 24th August

Our renowned hawker style dining event, with a very Kimberley twist, our Chinatown Feast guests are taken on a journey by Broome’s best food vendors, as they whip up a selection of delicious Asian fusion cuisine right before their eyes.

Featuring performances throughout the evening by local & touring artists, this event is a feast for all the senses.

HitFM WA Carnival of Nations

Making a long awaited come back, the HitFM WA Carnival of Nations, is a much loved event from Shinju Matsuris of the past.

Join us for a celebration of diversity & culture via a series of unique immersive performances & cultural displays, including a feature show by Tara Gower & Burrb Wanggarraju Nurlu – Indigenous Contemporary Dancers.

Grab your picnic rug & a bite to eat from the line-up of local food vans, before taking in a visual feast for all ages, paying homage to the rich & diverse cultural tapestry of Broome then & now.

Taste of Broome

A Taste of Broome is returning for its 10th year as an epic three-day cultural showcase that will delight your senses and entertain the entire family.

Festival goers will get a real taste of Broome’s best local food, culture, art, music, theatre & film across three main events, plus a series of smaller and more intimate events created for an all-inclusive Broome experience. Celebrate Broome’s identity and meet the locals as they share their history and heritage with you, during this unique festival that cannot be experienced anywhere else but right here.

A range of games for children & adults will be on offer, making it the perfect event for both families & groups of friends. Take in the beauty of Broome’s famous Roebuck Bay, at the Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures Jetty Gala, set amongst the iconic mangroves on Town Beach Jetty.

Delight your taste-buds as you indulge in a celebration of Kimberley delicacies, with a cocktail style menu curated by WA Chef Melissa Palinkas. Of course no cocktail evening would be complete without a special selection of local beverages & feature cocktail list.

Broome Air Raid Artwork Launch

10.30am | Town Beach | Free

“Nine Zeros, Nine Stories” is a new public artwork at Town Beach. A collaboration between two Australian artists, Perth based Paula Hart and Broome local Chris Maher, the artwork depicts nine figures looking out to Roebuck Bay where 15 flying boats were destroyed by 9 Japanese ‘Zero’ fighter planes during the WWII Broome Air Raid.

The work aims to reveal and enhance the history and curiosity of the many perspectives of the Japanese attack on Broome on March 3 1942. Join the Shire of Broome from 10:30AM for a morning of history and creativity as we celebrate the launch of this new public artwork, commissioned by the Shire of Broome and funded by Lotterywest.

Floating Lantern Matsuri

Our Floating Lantern Matsuri, is always one of the most iconic AND spectacular events on our festival program. The event is inspired by one of the Japan’s most fascinating & beautiful ancestral traditions, Toro Nagashi.

Join us for the most magical sunset experience at Gantheaume Point, as you set your glowing lantern, decorated with your thoughts & wishes, afloat on the outgoing evening tide. Be mesmerised by the beauty of the stunning display of light & dark, as the lantern’s glow majestically floats off into the distance.

Complete with a tantalising line up of Broome’s finest food vans parked up on the sand, the Floating Lantern Matsuri is the perfect fusion of cultural experience with delicious dining elements.

Matso’s Bento Beer & Comedy

The Matso’s Broome team are joining in on the celebrations for Shinju Matsuri, with an all day celebration of food, drink & entertainment. Join them for their festival of bento boxes & beers, paired with live entertainment from local musicians & performances by comedians!

Did you know the bento box is not just a daily meal packed in a box, but more of an art? It is the art of packing your favourite foods into a beautiful box. Matched with an icy cold Matsos brew, or one of the Japanese inspired cocktails from their specialty list, that’s Thursday’s lunch or dinner sorted at Matsos!

Shinju Matsuri Art Awards Presentation

The Shinju Matsuri Arts Awards get more exciting every year with the sheer diversity of incredible talent we have here in Broome. While there is no set theme, entering artists are encouraged to find inspiration from Shinju Matsuri as well as the diverse culture, history & people of Broome.

This year’s awards & exhibition will take over the Broome Civic Centre during the final week of our 2022 festival. The People’s Choice Award vote will be open throughout the exhibition, with the winner being announced at the LiveLighter Festival Finale on Sunday 4th September at Town Beach.

Sunset Long Table Dinner

For the very first time there are two Sunset Long Table Dinners on the Shinju Matsuri program, Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd September. Renowned as one of WA’s most exclusive dinner tables, our Sunset Long Table Dinners are a unique outdoor dining experience, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Cable Beach.

This year’s indulgent 4 course menu, influenced by the unique mix of cultures from Broome’s pearling days, has been curated by Brendan Pang & will be catered by local food gurus, Sydney Cove Oyster Bar Broome.

Enjoy a free-flowing premium beverage selection, featuring WA beers by Spinifex Brewing Co. & Great Southern wines by Omrah Wines, plus a specialty cocktail list, designed to compliment the tantalising cuisine being served throughout the evening.

Our exciting 16-day event program builds towards final celebration at the LiveLighter Festival Finale, marking the official ending of Shinju Matsuri 2022.

Returning to Town Beach for a second year, the LiveLighter Festival Finale is a dazzling evening of performances by both local & touring artists including Joan & the Giants, and YUCK Circus, plus the highly anticipated fireworks display, thanks to Broome International Airport.
